During the Haitian Revolution, Napoleon sent Polish soldiers to suppress the uprising, but many of them, seeing the rebels’ fight for freedom, switched sides and fought alongside them. Recognized for their bravery, some Poles were granted Haitian citizenship after the country’s independence in 1804.
