Do you have a third place? Is this something that Vancouver is lacking compared to other cities?
I love the idea of having a third place, somewhere to hangout regularly, maybe 2 or 3 times a week, and where you know you'll bump into some friends or other regulars without the need to make plans ahead of time. The majority of coffee shops/cafes are closed before 6pm, there are very few casual pubs/bars that are styled like this, and most community rec programs don't offer much in the way of flexibility, you've got to register way ahead and they usually run on a fixed schedule.
Historically having a third place has been quite important to society, the cafes across Europe are where artists, writers, musicians, politicians would all meet, share ideas, start movements, etc. In New York the punk scene was born out of a few bars/cafes where strangers with common beliefs and shared passions would spend their free time.
These days I feel like all I do is move between my apartment, the gym, and my job. It definitely feels like something is missing from my life in this city and I'm sure there are many people that feel the same way. So do you have that third place in your life? Is there a space to try and create more of these places? Do you know any other cities that sill have these places?
