Staying in Sri Lanka vs. Moving Overseas: What's Better for the Long Term?
Hey Reddit,
I’m currently at a crossroads and could really use some advice. My family and I are based in Sri Lanka, where we have a house, a car, and I have a stable job. However, I’m starting to think more about the long-term future, especially for my daughter.
For context, neither my wife nor I have the educational qualifications typically needed to directly apply for Permanent Residency (PR) in many countries. Here are the paths we’re considering if we decide to move overseas:
Student Pathway: One of us could pursue higher education abroad, with the goal of eventually securing a job and applying for PR.
Getting Qualifications Locally: We could work on getting the necessary qualifications while still in Sri Lanka and then apply for PR.
Job Applications: Start applying for jobs overseas and hope to get sponsored by an employer.
We’re trying to weigh the benefits of staying here (stability, current assets) versus the potential opportunities overseas (better education and future for our daughter).
Have any of you faced a similar dilemma? What would you recommend based on your experiences? Is it worth the challenges to move abroad for a better future, or should we focus on making the most of what we have here?
Looking forward to your thoughts!
Thanks!
