What are the all DEI fires going to do now?
A big part of the whole “woke capitalism” era was the system’s successful co-option of new social movements through the multiplication of DEI jobs in corporate bureaucracies. Dangling a little prestige and a salary proved a ruthlessly efficient means of diverting activist energies to the service of capital.
The diversity agenda came at the cost of internal corporate efficiency, but was judged to be a reasonable price to pay for good company PR. It also helped to attract and placate millennial hires in an era where companies still cared about onboarding and retaining the next generation.
But the pendulum has swung. A lot of these positions have been getting cut - now federally too.
It’s hard to feel a lot of sympathy, but you’ve got to wonder about the consequences of alienating a group of people whose only real skill is activism and politicking. Doesn’t seem like a recipe for social peace.
