Leaving pup home alone

Please help as I am feeling very deflated.

We’ve got a 5 month old miniature dachshund and we are struggling to get out the house without him - we work from home so we are always around him. Now don’t get me wrong, we aren’t hoping to be out the house for hours on end but even a quick trip to the supermarket is impossible currently. We live in a hot climate so taking him out during the day with us isn’t really a possibility until the weather cools.

I honestly feel trapped indoors and like I’ll be a prisoner in my home forever.

He is crate trained for night time and sleeps in there fine! However, he doesn’t tend to settle in there during the day and barks/whines. When we try to leave, we don’t want to just “let him bark it out” as we live in an apartment and I’m not sure he’d ever tire of barking!

We take him out for long walks and sniffs before we try to leave but he either stays awake or just dozes rather than sleeps, so he’s very aware of us being there.

Please help!
