[Multiple Sources] Fresh Recommendations by a Korean
Some fresh recommendation unlike the factory-pressed manwha I see a lot in this subreddit (how many times have y'all read Solo-Leveling?) I'm not too sure about the translations, but some are translated and available on Naver Webtoon.
If an English name is available, that title was put first. Otherwise (untranslated) the Korean title was put first, with my own explanatory rough English translation on the side.
High recommends are bolded with stars "***" next to them. Pictures posted on the bottom of explanations.
I have a lot more recommendations, but, oh well. Maybe I'll do another post.
Tragedy / Horror
***The Horizon (Korean: 수평선)
- tragedy, drama, post-apocalyptic
- notes: gritty drawing style, doesn't hold back punches, 2nd highest rated manhwa on MyAnimeList, written by the author of "The Boxer"
물위의 우리 (personal translation: "We on the Waters")
- tragedy, drama, post-apocalyptic
- notes: deals with a future after the rise of sea levels, a fight for survival, resources. Shows both small scale (personal stories) and large scale (politics and worldbuilding) stories.
Drama
***The Spark in Your Eyes (Korean: 저무는 해, 시린 눈)
- tragedy, drama, medieval, romance, fantasy
- notes: unobtrusive romance (many males readers enjoy it as well), strong worldbuilding, heavy but realistic tragedy, season 1 is finished so you don't need to wait for more chapters.
Guardians of the Video Game (Korean: 전자오락수호대)
- adventure, fantasy(?)(hard to pinpoint the genre)
- notes: renowned in Korea but unknown in the West (kinda like Nichijou), surprisingly deep, stylistic artstyle change throughout the story, adult-version Wreck it Ralph
1 Second (1초)
- drama, work, firefighting
- notes: a well-created mix of a special ability and display of real-life firefighting (such as trauma)
***One Step Closer to the Demon King (Korean: 마왕까지 한 걸음)
- fantasy
- very tight world-building, heavy on the fantasy, the main character wants to fight against the demon king to determine the strongest, but looses all her powers before then (but NOT in a cliche way, pls trust me on this)
Trope Deconstruction (y'all need this)
Lethal Romance (Korean: 필살VS로맨스)
- Comedy that deals with martial arts tropes (e.g. fist of the north star) and romance tropes (any factory-press romance anime) and flips the tropes in an unexpected way.
오늘의 순정망화 (rough translation by me: "today's shojo fail-hwa")
- Deconstructs the romance genre, absolutely hilarious. No idea where to find a translation (or English title for that matter), sorry folks.
성검전설 (personal translation: "Legend of the Holy Sword")
- fantasy, comedy, deconstruction of the hero's tale
- Ghost Stories dub, but official and manwha. What more need be said?
