My friend Sam (18) got caught shoplifting

My friend Sam (18) has always been a really smart girl she’s been in honors she’s achieved so much she’s always been the type of girl who never gets a grade lower than a C but recently she got caught stealing at target and she was charged with a class one misdemeanor in northern Virginia and she has to attend court in a month unfortunately she cannot afford a lawyer or any type of legal help due to us just being broke college students please please give us any tips or anything we can say to help her avoid jail time
