Bye grom :( (rear ended and totaled just days after first service)
I just loaded my Grom onto a tow truck after getting word it’s totaled.
I was stopped at a light and the stopped car behind me was watching his phone and decided to just “go” for some reason. The grom’s front brake held, but as a result, the bike bent upward hitting me in the “taint” - the subframe cracked in several places, the swingarm bent, the frame cracked in several places. My hand took a significant impact from the bars flipping around, I got hit in the lower back by my cargo box, and… I’ll just say that the bike compressed upwards and I’ve got bruises places I didn’t know you could bruise.
I got the whole thing on video, as well as the driver admitting what happened. It was very quick and I’m not out any money. I did have to spend 6 hours getting imaging done since they thought I might have a pelvic fracture. Still can’t quite sit down comfortably and my hands pins and needles 10 days later, but no broken pelvis and my lower back is pretty good - that back armor did its job.
I don’t know if I’ll buy another grom, I was never quite as happy with it as I thought I would be. I want something a little bit bigger but still small as a “run to the store” bike. At my other place I have 2 Navis, so maybe here I’ll get an xr150L or maybe a larger scooter. Was looking at a klx300sm or 230sm as well (but the 230 fuel range isn’t even 100 miles!). My tenere and other big bikes are a little big to just jaunt to the corner store. Anyways, you all ride safe and keep the shiny side up.
Now I just need to sell the rear shock, fork springs, and monkey fork guards I had bought but not installed yet :(
