Best inexpensive shotgun for home defense?

I'd like to purchase a shotgun for HD but have never purchased a gun before.

Someone told me a Mossberg 500 is a good option but I haven't looked into that one yet.

Are there many good options for about $400? And what should I be looking for as far as quality and dependability?
