Grosjean's Bahrain crash highlighted exceptional car design, not marshal/medical team effectiveness.
Firstly, I do not think the marshalling and medical team did anything wrong. When faced with such a situation, I would have frozen at the sight of the inferno, while these men reacted quickly and with bravery and as such deserve to be commended for their actions.
The halo undoubtedly saved Romain's life today. As did the monocoque and fire retardant suit, and the various other safety features. It is a technological marvel that the 53G impact did not render him unconscious, let alone kill him. After the car successfully protected Romain, he himself was the sole reason he survived. He would have leapt from the car regardless of whether a marshal was there and escaped with roughly the same injuries.
Watching the crash back, it is clear to see the marshal and medical team equipment is next to useless when you think about how quickly those flames could have seriously injured Romain. The marshal behind the barriers was seemingly equipped with a garden sprinkler and soon gave up after realising it had no effect, and the handheld extinguishers held by the others appeared to have slow progress in fighting the fire. Imagine if Romain had been knocked out? The outcome surely would have been much graver.
As such, I am left feeling frustrated as it seems to me that the responding teams were ill-equipped, and if there were to be a similar crash in which the driver does not escape, his chances of survival will be much lower than what they could be if equipment or procedures were improved.
I have been left with a nauseating sensation for the rest of my day as I am sure many others will have too. I would love to be proven wrong and someone to explain why so that I do not feel so frustrated.
