Going to the ER every 2 weeks
My wife is on PD and has been going to the ER every two weeks with nausea, vomiting, and kidney pain. Sometimes she has been admitted but every time after some IV fluids she gets better. They also give her pain medicine and nausea medicines.
At home we have a bunch of prescribed nausea medicines but it doesn’t really well since even once she starts feeling nauseous, she will throw up the medicine. Juice sometimes is fine but water is very hard to keep down unless we do like 30ml every 30 minutes.
Once she starts vomiting we do yellows until she gets better but it always ends in the ER and she loses multiple kilos from not eating and barely drinking anything.
We have talked to the nephrologist and the kidney center, but they mention that this is normal. But is it really? We’ve been to the ER over 10 days in the last 6 months. They always do blood tests, sometimes test the dialysate, sometimes do blood cultures and other scans, but the result is the same.
Her labs look fine in terms of the phosphorus and potassium. No concerns with the adequacy tests. Is this really normal? Nowadays when this happens we ask for IV fluids upfront and it usually resolves quickly, but obviously it’s really hard to be throwing up and have severe pain every month.
