Was anyone else bowled over by Alex Ross Perry's praise of the Brian Herbert Dune books?

Full disclosure, I have never read any non Frank Dune books, because I have literally never heard anybody say a single positive thing about them. I've never even read a middling review, they seem to be universally regarded as irredeemable trash. In sci-fi circles, Brian Herbert's name is basically synonymous with talentless hack. When ARP casually described the books that follow Chapterhouse Dune as wonderful, I initially thought he was being a sarcastic little stinker. Later in the episode when he talked about how everything to him is either wonderful or terrible, his take made a bit more sense.

Have any of you read any of Brian Herbert's books? Am I, as a serious Dune head, doing myself a disservice by not reading them?
