The new rule has more problems than just the massive censorship
TLDR; The nsfw ban does more harm than good and gives bad apples in the community fuel. Reconsider the rule. It not only harms most of the community who isn’t part of this problematic minority, but also lets this minority thrive with newfound confidence as they use our anger to try get themselves a spot in the community where they don’t belong. Keep fighting back everyone!
I’ve had the same situation happen in multiple large discords in which it inherently blocked discussion of the majority of content within that community. Yes, a complete NSFW ban would mean subjects other than sexual content such as depressive themes and violence would also be not allowed.
Though there is enough posts about that. There is another concern I’m not seeing discussed enough.
When you put sudden censorship without warning in a large community like this who has a large culture of NSFW songs (again, not just including sexual content), you of course, bring forth massive backlash. Though, there’s more to that backlash that creatures further concerns.
When backlash like this happens, it allows awful people in the community to be shielded inside the crossfire as they join in on the fight back. Before anyone misunderstands, I do NOT mean everyone fighting back is this kind of person. I’m fighting back too!
It lets them hide in the crowd, and potentially even find each other, where they will begin to defend themselves in large groups that as a result cause more harm and make our community look incredibly unwelcoming. Even if a new sub is potentially made where the moderation makes better choices, the damage is already done here, as these people have found one another and realized they have some people with the same beliefs. So they will feel more comfortable now sharing an awful agenda (even if they mostly get bashed on any site they talk in) anywhere they go. Due to this change, we may be seeing awful people more often in our community trying to fit in with us where they do not belong. Censorship in moderation is a good thing most of the time, but this is incredibly overboard and villainizes a huge chunk of the community that wasn’t a part of the core problem.
Mods, please reconsider a full ban. While I’m not someone who is a fan of very clear sexual content in music, that’s what NSFW tags are for! I think you’re misunderstanding both the label of what ‘NSFW’ means (it doesn’t just mean sexual content!), while also clearly not thinking through how such a steep ban harms not only your present community, but allows bad apples to inherently ‘win’ what they desire; to be in the community where they don’t belong.
If you were sick of the constant posts of the situation with the songs that had themes that could be seen as pedophilic (believe me, I was sick of seeing these posts too), then you could have just put a temporary ban on discussions until the heat died down, or ban talks on the song altogether. Yes, it still would have brought some backlash, but it wouldn’t censor a huge majority of the community like this new rule does. It would only keep most of the bad apples out. This change while maybe good intentioned does much more harm than good. Please do better
