Transportation in Tahiti

Hi! I’ve been using this sub and doing research for our upcoming trip to Tahiti over new years and was hoping for some advice on transportation. My bf and I will be in Tahiti for 1.5 days before leaving for Moorea. We plan to rent scooters in Moorea, but are trying to decide between a car vs scooter for our first 1.5 days in Tahiti when we land. I see different reviews on car vs scooter in Tahiti, but a lot of them are from 16+ years ago and suggest no scooters because it’s dangerous. We’re comfortable using scooters, but want to know if it’ll be easy to travel around the island with (roads, traffic, accessibility, etc.)

More info - we land at night and will be staying on the west side of the island. Plan is to chill at the hotel the night we land, explore the next day, then we have a half day before we take the ferry to Moorea for checkin. I believe our Tahiti hotel offers transport from the airport, but should we go ahead and get a car when we land? Or wait to rent scooters/car in the AM? Also which do you suggest we rent if we plan to do snorkeling, hiking, and general island exploring?
