What was your background when applying for a PhD?

Hey guys,

I am applying for PhDs in the UK, and was wondering what was your guys' background when you applied for a PhD. I have eyes on two projects that align well with my background and I am passionate about doing. I am very nervous that my background may be too weak compared to others and if I should even expect to be called up for interviews or got admitted. By background, I meant undergraduate/master's grade, publications etc., I did both undergraduate and master's in the UK, and not a lot of people I know have publications (only one person I know has published a paper).
