Scan of birth certificate for emergency appointment?

I have an emergency appointment at the Boston passport office tomorrow, since I leave for my trip on Thursday. I secured this appointment through my Senator, Ossoff. My original birth certificate is already in the "system" but I'm a college student, and the official certificate is back home in Georgia. Can I bring a copy of the birth certificate, or do I absolutely need the original?
