Questions from a university prof

Student expectations seem very different from when I was in university and I’m curious about why this is happening. I teach at a university with a very high entering average, yet i see these things. So I thought I’d go to the people who teach them before I do!

Is it the norm to give lots of extensions on assignments? Or even to allow them to hand in all their work at the end of the semester?

Is it normal to give “grade bumps” for no reason other than the student asked for one?

Why are the students’ research skills so weak? By research I don’t even mean academic research, but googling basic things like “when is reading week?”

Why do students email about everything when the information is available? Eg “I know you said no penalties until x date but I just wanted to check there’s no penalties until x date”.

Just to be clear, I do not blame high school teachers for any of this. You guys have a very difficult job and no resources to do it with. I’ve just noticed these changes and wondered where they’re coming from.
