Mets Daily Discussion Thread - February 05, 2025
Good morning!
Eric O'Flaherty turns 40 today, the long time Braves lefty reliever pitched for the 2015 Mets. Josh Lewin once said during a game he couldn't find the strike zone with a compass.
Roberto Alomar turns 57 today, the hall of fame second baseman played two years for the 2002 and 2003 Mets. He retired from baseball after the 2004 season and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2011 on his second ballot.
Austin Warren turns 29 today, the righty reliever pitched for the Angels from 2021 to 2023 and for the Giants in 2024. The Mets claimed Warren off waivers from the Giants on January 15th.
On this date in 1903, Joan Whitney Payson is born. Payson was the first owner of the Mets from 1962 to her death in 1975. She was a socialite and baseball fan, as well as member of the influential Whitney family, her brother John "Jock" Whitney who also owned the New York Herald Tribune. Joan Whitney Payson was a shareholder of the New York baseball Giants who opposed moving the Giants to San Francisco. Payson oversaw the early, rather ugly days of the 1960s Mets and the 1969 Mets who won the World Series. She was a dedicated fan and an owner who was beloved by her players. She died in October 1975 and team ownership went to her husband Charles Payson and daughter Lorinda de Roulet. In 1980, Payson and de Roulet sold the Mets to Nelson Doubleday and Fred Wilpon.
