What is The Unforgiven actually about?

I'm doing a report on "The Unforgiven" by Metallica for school and I'm having trouble finding reliable sources on what the song is about. I've seen multiple different interpretations but none that seem to be anything more than speculation.

Also, does anyone know some good sources where I could read up more on Metallica's history?
