Am I a bad reporter? Will I get better?
I've landed my first job out of college at a newspaper, and I've been here for a little over two months. I've just had to submit my 4th correction for a really dumb mistake. I have a bad habit of writing down what I hear, and it results in words coming out a letter off. Think 'Mario' instead of 'Mareo.' I also know nothing of the area, so I end up researching the wrong stuff, like flooding where there are no floods. I feel dumb. Really dumb.
A part of me thinks it's because I didn't study print (I studied and interned for television, but in this job market, I took the first place that offered me a job after months of searching), never thought I'd be pumping out this many stories daily in a new area. However, I get calls and messages every week from people that read the paper saying they love my stories, particularly the ones that aren't hard news.
I don't know if I should quit before I get fired and just keep trying for TV. I read a lot of success stories in news, but not a lot of failures. Is this normal? Does it get better? Would anyone mind sharing a personal redemption story from when they were green?
