To all the people who are saying Mtech is not worth it!!!

Yesterday, while having lunch and talking to my friend over a call about placements and the GATE exam, I mentioned that I was taking a drop year to prepare for GATE instead of sitting for placements ( I am in 4th year right now )

A random guy sitting nearby ( 3 years older than me ) overheard and asked, “Are you preparing for GATE?”

Me: “Yes, I’m preparing for GATE and planning to take a drop year for it.”

Him: “MTech isn’t worth it, bro. If you want to do a master’s, go for an MS abroad. That’s the only thing that matters. MTech has no value.”

(Though his comment annoyed me because I felt he should mind his own business, I replied politely.)

Me: “If you pursue MTech from a random college, then yes, it might not be worth it. But if you crack the top IITs and choose a good branch, it can lead to a 30+ LPA package. It’s all about putting in the hard work.”

Him: “But why not MS abroad?”

Me: “An MS abroad is expensive and involves a lot of risks and competition. If you don’t land a job, the U.S. will send you back. Plus, the GRE is relatively easy also from India only, every year 10 lacs + people go for MS abroad. On the other hand, GATE is tough, and if you crack it, you’re already ahead of the curve. Many lives have changed after MTech. For example, my friend got AIR 28 in GATE and is now working at Microsoft in Seattle. There are plenty of such success stories.”

Him: “Oh, that’s great, nice!”

Me: “By the way, which company are you working for right now?”

Him: “I work at Cognizant.”

Me (internally): End of discussion!

I just want to say that guys, study as much as you can, cause in today's world, one who works hard, focuses on their work and minds their own business, is going to be successful.
