Planning to try my first flip

We've had this old dresser since I was a kid, and I'd like to finally freshen it up a bit. I considered painting it (maybe deep blue or green to go with the black top and antique look good hardware?) but also thinking about staining it?

I believe it's solid wood but it has a very uniform matte look (particularly on the sides) which is making me nervous about staining. Anyone know why this might be or have suggestions on how to update this? Thanks in advance!
