Help - something looks wrong with my fireplace

Hey folks, I'm rather new to having a fireplace and just noticed something concerning. The top part of my fireplace looks like it has a flappy thing dangling, like cloth.

It has been on quite a few times the past 3 weeks and I never noticed this.

Should I be concerned? What is this?
