Best Free Unit Picks During New Player Tutorial
So I'm a relatively new player, just wanted to share my research so far on the free units you can pick after the Tutorial. Obviously, I'm still a noob so comments and feedback are welcome.
First off we have the "Pick 3 green units out of 6", available options are:
- Demesne Spearmen
- Ironcap Swordsmen
- Rattan Roundshields
- Demesne Archers
- Ironcap Arquebusiers
- Pike Militia
First, it goes without saying that Pike Militia is a must-have, everyone and their mother loves them, and through my brief experience, F2 holding the line is really good during low-level games as a lot of units will just come and suicide on the pikes. I hear they are a beast after you max out the middle veterancy tree and I can't wait.
Secondly, I would say Ironcap Swordsmen is also extremely popular, and a lot of sources I've read said they are one of the best green units in the game, so that's that.
For the last one, it's a bit tough. If you want to rush Spear Sargent in the Chivalry unit tree like a lot of people recommend, picking Demesne Spearmen would save you a good 2000 honor. But the spearmen themselves are meh at best.
Then we have the Demense Archers, which is the only Archer option here. Picking these will allow you to get a head start on the Season 2 Namkhan Archers challenge when you hit lv 15. Namkhan Archers are considered to be one of the best Archer units in the game. Other than helping the season challenge, these Archers are not that good.
Ironcap Arquebusiers has pretty decent damage, but doesn't help you towards getting any awesome units like the archers and pikemen.
Rattan Roundshields are pretty decent with their good defense stats, but are afraid of fire. I think them and Ironcap Swordsmen are redundant so you should consider taking one or the other. Most people would pick Ironcap Swordsmen I think.
Then, you get to pick 1 out of 3 Blue units:
- Ironcap Spearmen
- Squire
- Halberdiers
Out of the three I think I would pick Ironcap Spearmen, because they are a really solid shield wall unit and I didn't pick Demesne Spearmen earlier.
Halbadiers are also a good pick because they can upgrade into Landsknechts which is a pretty good Polearm unit.
Squires aren't considered that great so I wouldn't recommend picking it.
