Countertop against casing

Is it just me or does something about this look off? I feel like the countertop should go all the way to the wall with a backsplash, but maybe they didn't do it that way because the window casing is in the way.

It looks like they filled up the gap from the front with some wood, but not the top where there is just a big hole. It's likely still be a work in progress but I guess I'm just wondering what they could be planning here. Is there a proper fix for the top gap between the countertop and wall? How would you handle this situation?
