Is a roadtrip feasible?

My wife and I are in the very preliminary stages of planning a vacation to Australia and while I would prefer to visit Sidney she is interested in visiting the Australian Zoo so we are considering doing a roadtrip. It looks like Sydney to the Sunshine Coast are about a 10 hour drive apart. I'm American and have taken long roadtrips through the American south and southwest in the past so that isn't a deal breaker on its own. I'd like opinions from Aussies, would a roadtrip be worth the effort or would we have more fun sticking to one location?
