AI Squads

So I wanted to make a gamemaster game for the boys where everyone would be a squad leader and command an AI group and it would give the scenario a huge battle vibe. After about 15 hours of extensive testing, I have concluded it just might not work very well. I am going to build it anyway but there are some major problems in AI behavior that I have noticed that detract from gameplay and immersion.

  1. Commands are sometimes ignored: this one is not huge. I have found that by issuing a halt command, follow me, and then reissue the original order, it kind of resets them and they will perform the action as ordered. Slightly annoying but not a big deal.

  2. Very poor collision recognition while driving: this one is more important if you have ever tried to get into two separate vehicles with a friend and both order you squads to drive out of town, it is a total shit show of vehicles ramming into each other for a whole minute before they can figure out how to get out of town. It is at the point where if there are two squads in close proximity, human drivers are an absolute must because the AI simply cannot function.

  3. Super inconsistent reaction to combat. Sometimes I walk into a gunfight, and they all move to engage very smoothly. Sometimes only one guy starts fighting and the others just freeze and chill off to the side doing absolutely nothing. Very irritating and low key makes them almost unusable.

I love the feature but wish it worked properly. It seems like as soon as you recruit an AI they get totally stupid and borderline nonfunctional. Are there any planned improvements for this from the devs and does anyone have any experience with mods that resolve at least the combat issue?
